The Washington State University soccer team made their first NCAA tournament appearance in six years last season and drew the Texas Longhorns in their first round match in Portland. What seemed, at that time, like a winnable match turned into a long and excruciatingly close match eventually won by the Longhorns, 1-0. But it is a new year and Wazzu came out firing on all cylinders and quickly exacted their revenge on Texas in crushing the Longhorns, 4-0 in Austin. With the victory, the Cougars improve to 5-2 overall on the year.
Wazzu came out firing shots left and right at Texas in the first half and their first shot connected with the net a mere 17 minutes into the half when true freshman Brandi Vega scored her third goal of th season to put the Cougars on the board with a 1-0 lead. Senior Elysse Van Leer subbed in for Vega and 11 minutes later, Van Leer recorded her first goal of 2009 to give Wazzu a 2-0 lead. Another 11 minutes passed and this time, it was junior Emma Stolz hitting her second goal of the season to give the Cougars a commanding 3-0 lead going into halftime.
The two teams battled through a mostly scoreless second half although Wazzu had the upper hand for the majority of the half. Sophomore Jacquelyn Roth finally broke through for the Cougars with her first goal of the 2009 season to give Wazzu a 4-0 lead that they would hold for the remainder of the match.
Wazzu again outshot their opponent, this time by a 17-11 margin and tacked on a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks as well.
