Former Wazzu distance ace and defending world champion Bernard Lagat was looking to get "revenge" after getting boxed in during the men's 1500 final and very nearly got his reward but Lagat was unable to reel in Ethiopian Kenenisa Bekele at the finish line as Bekele eeked the win by a scant .26 seconds, leaving Lagat to settle for the silver medal in the men's 5000 meter final at the World Track & Field Championships in Berlin.
Bekele led from start to finish as the relative slow pace of the championship final played out as usual to the final lap where Bekele began his sprint from 200 meters out and took Lagat with him. But Lagat was unable to completely track down Bekele as the Ethiopian and world record holder held off the American for the slim victory. Lagat finishes the competition with two medals - a bronze in the 1500 meters and the silver in the 5000 meters.
