January 8, 2011The Washington State University Cougar men's hoop team defeated Oregon without the drama, defeating the Ducks, 77-63 at Beasley Coliseum in Pullman. With the win, the Cougars even up their Pac-10 conference record at 2-2 and improve to 12-4 overall.
The question of what it would be like for the Cougars if junior shooting guards Klay Thompson and Faisal Aden were not scoring was answered in the first half as Aden and Thompson, Wazzu's two leading scorers, combined for just six points in the first half [with Thompson's five points coming on shots late in the period]. Oregon took advantage of the dynamic duo's first half scoring maladies and forged an early eight-point lead at 17-9. But fueled by sophomore point guard Reggie Moore, Wazzu responded with an 18-2 run that produced a 27-19 lead they would never relinquish. Moore scored 15 points in the half for the Cougars and by the time Thompson was finally hitting his shots late in the half, he gave Wazzu their largest lead with a three-ball that put the Cougars up 39-26 going into the locker room at halftime.
Thompson hit his first two shot attempts in the second half and scored 10 of the Cougars' 19 points as they opened up their biggest lead of the game at 58-37. Wazzu never allowed the Ducks to get the lead under double digits as they cruised in for the victory.
Thompson led four Cougars in double figures with 16 points followed by Moore with 15 points, junior Marcus Capers with 13 points and junior forward DeAngelo Casto with 12 points.
- Capers' 13 points was his second-highest scoring output of the season [Capers had 14 in Wazzu's win over Santa Clara].
